Guys…It’s Movember! The month when your guy friends grow their moustaches and others vow not to shave (their beards or hair) for the month. Have you ever wondered where this fascinating concept of looking all shaggy and rusty among men came from?
Well, Movember is a global men’s event held in November to raise awareness on men’s key health issues such as suicide, testicular cancer and prostate cancer. Movember joins the word ‘Mo’ – meaning moustache – and “No “’ for November’ to make Movember! A number of people have gone ahead to include other key health issues affecting men depending on what they feel affects men most in their locality such as fitness.
According to the World Health Organization, close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year and 75% of this cases involve men, majority of them being under the age of 35. Testicular cancer most commonly occurs in males of between 20 to 34 years and in 2015 for example, affected about 686,000 people. Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death in men and last year 1.3 million cases were reported, that’s according to the World Cancer Research (WCR)
The statistics above clearly shows why the Movember movement has earned a lot of attention in the global sphere over the last decade in its course of changing the face of men’s health. The movement started in Australia in 2003 has the moustache as the ribbon that drives the message home.
Globally, men are known for having a low emotional EQ, thus are do not easily share their emotions nor express themselves; hence they end up dying inside which is a recipe for depression, while some end up committing suicide. Compared to women, men are known to seek medical help as the last option and at the last minute, and this has been the main focus in Movember – encouraging men to seek medical help and actually walking with them in this journey therefore, and perhaps saving lives.
According to Psychology Today men may express emotions only in places where they feel safe, and where the expression of feelings is considered acceptable. Thus, we need to create an environment where men can feel comfortable to visit, seek help or even release pressure. Such places include sporting areas such as football, golf or any other sport of interest depending on an individual.
How can we help men in our lives?
Men are dying too young and we cannot afford to stay silent. By supporting a man during this month can go a long way in improving his health in whichever way. May it be your brother, father, uncle husband or boyfriend you can join the global movement in ensuring that we save a man!
This month, Rosslyn Riviera Mall, encourages men to spend time with people who make them feel good and stay connected with them at all times. Family and friends are important and spending time with them is good for their mental health in particular.
As men age, we encourage them to have a conversation with their doctors about prostate and testicular cancer.
The role Rosslyn Riviera Mall is playing during Movember
Rosslyn Riviera Mall is one of the perfect places to feel good as it offers a convenient, charming and intimate environment. An hour at the Nairobi Golf Simulator located at the Mall for example, can help him release pressure and give him that liveliness. This is an indoor golf facility providing Indoor Golf to the Golfing community and serves as a practice and training center featuring state of the art club fitting done with Industry leading simulator.
On matters health, Movember tries to encourage men to take control of their health as it is known that men are more reluctant to go to the doctor until when it is too late, as it is derived from a certain masculinity that tells men they are supposed to be brave and tough. A visit at Level 3 of the Mall will reveal the Nairobi Hospital Branch that offers privacy and qualified doctors that will help in diagnosis, treatment and professional advice on any matter.
If you are the type who enjoys dinner dates, or some relaxing evenings with a drink, you are spoilt for choice at Rosslyn Riviera Mall. You can relax with your man this Movember and celebrate him with a heart to heart “Mo-Ments” at Fonda Restaurant, an exceptional Mexican Restaurant located at Level three. If you want to let your hair down, our food court has a range of options with NewsCafe offering the best cocktails among other sizzling array of drinks, or hang out at the Food Court where there’s a variety of good restaurants to choose from – German Point, Wing Hong and Marigold as you relax and get down to some good funk and soul music every Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Newscafe also next to the foodcourt will make a good meeting point for ‘the guys’. You get to save you fave tipple in your personal ‘locker’ until the next time a good time is to be had. How brilliant is that!
